LOLA ROSE
WOOD
Having graduated from Cambridge University in 2021, I’ve since been part of the Marlowe Writer’s Room and The Hackney Empire Writer’s Room. In an overpriced bid to find dramatic fellowship, I’m currently undertaking the Playwriting Msc The University of Edinburgh thanks to the William Hunter Sharpe Memorial Scholarship.
My work has been long-listed for the Bill Cashmore Award and shared at scratch nights and festivals up and down the UK, from Stratford East and Greenwich Theatre to Bedford Fringe and Stage2Page in Glasgow. As a company member of the Edinburgh-based theatre collective Heads on Crooked, I also love directing and dramaturging new work by other emerging creatives.
My plays span genre and form: set anywhere from the London Underground to the South Pole, following cardboard-box-people to a woman who wants to be a donut. Despite their seeming disparity, my plays often stem from the paradoxical state of being both the oppressor and the oppressed. My work explores how individual acts of complicity add up to prop up and perpetuate systems of harm. How do our own human acts of ignorance, silence or carelessness help create inhuman systems of white supremacist, capitalist patriarchal oppression? And, more imaginatively, how do we transform ourselves?
